Jack C. Wray

Jack C. Wray

  Jack Wray, 78, of Savannah, GA, passed away on August 17, 2023 in the presence of his loving wife Karen, after a multi-year battle with dementia.

  Jack was born on June 03, 1945 to Wade N. and Nadine H. Wray in the city of Burlington, NC. After Jack graduated from Walter N. Williams High School in 1963, he pursued a degree in mathematics at Lenoir Rhyne College, Hickory, NC . 

  In 1969, he met Karen on a blind date while in seminary, and they married in 1971 after graduation. Jack and Karen have one son, Derek.

  After graduation, he attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC serving Lutheran parishes in Guyton, Rossville and Savannah, GA and Nashville, TN.  Jack  entered the financial services arena in the late '80s working with Thrivent, New York Life,  and his own business in estate planning. Jack retired in 2011.

 After retiring, Jack became a history buff and  developed  two walking  history tours in Savannah.  He served as a docent for the Green-Meldrim House and St. John's Church.  He authored a civil  war book entitled 'Who really saved Savannah?'  He taught Sunday School many years after retirement. Jack enjoyed simple carpentry making ornamental  ladders, wooden shelves, and bird feeders.  He was a jokester and loved surprising others.  He was always passionate about church life and  service.

 Jack was predeceased by his father Wade, mother Nadine, and sister Hope. He is survived by his wife Karen and son Derek (wife Mary, sons Nathan and Nolan) nephew Robert Howell, brother in law William G.  Howell. 

 Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Green-Meldrim House, c/o St. John's Episcopal Church.
